Yes, there are 6 full years of General Medicine. At least. Mmm, what? Is it more? 4-5-6 more years of residency until you can call yourself a specialist as a medical doctor? You read that right.
My name is Enola Jieanu, I am a Romanian local student in “Victor Babeș” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, in my 4th year for bachelor’s degree.
I want to help any future student at this university to have it all good from the beginning. Even though I am Romanian, I had a, let’s call it challenging time, in my 1st year as a medical student. From my family’s big apartment back home, with 20 meters square personal room to a 12 meters square dorm room shared with 3 other girls. I wouldn’t have minded to share, of course, but I didn’t have the nicest dorm collegues. So, I know how it is to not being able to communicate (even though we were speaking the same language) or to ask for help or to just have someone to guide me.
I loved the 1st year in this university. I still do. So empowering professors, such a lot of volunteering done, so many free workshops and conferences you can get yourself into both to become better in medical knowledge and to make connections that turn into friendships. I will be real with you, not all the professors you will meet will make you feel motivated and interested in the subject they are presenting it to you. There is no garden without its weeds. And this will happen in any university you might go. I didn’t know that, so I had some disappointments in that 1st year.
It is almost 8 in the evening in an usual Wednesday when I am writing this paragraph and just the simple thought that I am in the 4th year of med school scares me. I have no idea how I got this far. Not because of the high volume of studying because you get used to it, but because of the time passing so fast. I still have dreams at night being in highschool. If you have the least fear that you won’t be able to pass through this university or that it takes too much when looking to your high school collegues that they start working and get money way before you finish your general studies, believe me that it will pay off. All you need is to have a real true goal to keep in mind when meeting those hard days and that goal might be whatever you want, it just has to be strong enough to push you further. I can tell you mine. Helping children in need.
I don’t wanna be cheesy and say that in all those study late nights I just remember my goal and a-bra-ca-da-bra, all the stress goes away. Obviously, it doesn’t. It just keeps you there. Working for your dream.
So, this is my real and not fancy piece of advice. See if you have THAT strong goal to keep you there. Unless, don’t do it for the money because they aren’t coming soon.
And one other important thing I have learned in med school is that med school is so long because it keeps repeating itself in information every study year, just from different angles that will make you see the whole piece – which is life – complete.
